Understanding the World

In this area of learning one aspect we focus on is the changes in our immediate environment and the world around us. Linking to our Traditional Tales topic and in particular the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, we have decided to grow our vey own grass head trolls in our classroom. We had a class discussion, talking about things that will help the grass grow. We decided that it is important that the grass gets lots of water and light. Taking this information on board, each class group decided where they would be placing their own grass heads. The first thing we had to do was let the grass heads soak in water until they all sank. They were floating on top of the water for a long time.

We also decided where we would place the testers, we chose to:

  • Leave one outside
  • Put one on the radiator
  • One in a dark cupboard
  • Leave one without water
  • Put one in the fridge

Have a look at the photos below and share your predictions of what will happen.

Look how much some of our grassheads grew!

Can your child tell you what helped the grass to grow?

Why did some of the grass turn yellow?

Which one grew the most?

Which one grew the least?
