Phonics

Look at phase 2 and phase 3 sounds:

Now choose whether your child needs more work on individual sounds (Phase 2/3) or whether they are ready to move onto words (Phase 3/4). During the writing sections, if your child is not ready to use cursive handwriting then just focus on standard letter formation and we can work on cursive later. Forming the letters correctly by not taking the pencil off of the paper and using lowercase letters instead of capitals is important.

 

Phase 2/3

Recap ‘j’ and ‘v’ from yesterday. Now focus on ‘y’.

Can your child think of any words beginning with the ‘y’ sound? (yes, yet, yellow, yak)

Have a go at writing the letter ‘y’.

Write the words yes, yet and yak down. Can your child have a go at reading them? Then can they have a go at writing them themselves?

 

Phase 3/4

Recap Phase 3 tricky words ‘they’ and ‘all’. Have a go at writing them.

Look at the High Frequency Word PowerPoint – can they read any words by sight? Encourage your child to sound out any words they are unsure of (unless they are tricky words).

Play Phase 4 Snakes and Ladders.

Write the sentence ‘They all said we can go to the park.”

Adult directed activity - Literacy

Today we are doing dictation, where you read a sentence and your child writes it independently, using their phonic knowledge to write the words. This means that it might not be written correctly, but that is ok! Your child might not be able to hear all of the sounds in a word and this is ok too! They might just hear the beginning and final sounds so ask them to write down the ones they can hear. You can read the sentence as many times as you would like in one go or split it into words.

Home reading - child to read (choose a book from Oxford owl linked to your child’s ability)

 

Lunch – today over lunch you could talk about your child’s favourite part of the Yoga routine. On Friday we did our first Yoga session in P.E. (based on The Three Little Pigs). Can your child recall what they did?

 

Mini Maths 

Recap on yesterday’s activity and the language of “heavier/lighter”. Give an apple or something similar to your child for them to feel. Then give them something much heavier, like a bag of sugar/flour. Ask them to say which is the heavier/lighter object. “The apple is lighter than the sugar/flour” or whichever objects you choose. Could the children estimate how many apples it would take to be as heavy as the flour/sugar? Could they find something that they think would be the heaviest?

 

Physical Activity

Go on an ABC treasure hunt in your house and/or garden if you have an outdoor space. Can you find something beginning with each letter of the alphabet?

 

Story time
Read The Rainbow Princess using the story map and actions.

Read this letter to your child – tell them that Miss Shepheard had this letter delivered to school:

“To Princess,

Thank you for helping me to find happiness.

Love from Mr Frog.”

See if your children can recognise the tricky words ‘to’, ‘thank you’ and ‘love’

Shared write a response with your child:

“To Mr Frog,

Thank you.

Love from the Princess.”
