Reading

All children have been given a school reading book, please share these books at home. We start our reading scheme with picture books as words on the page can be quite daunting for the children. As well as reading the words on the page it is just as important to look closely at the pictures and for the children to infer and discuss what they think is happenning. This provides opportunities for children to extend their thinking and develop their communication and language. Some possible questions to ask could be...

  • I wonder what is happening in the picture?
  • I wonder what could happen next?
  • Who are the main characters?
  • What do they look like?
  • I wonder how are they feeling?
  • How do you know?
  • We  also encourage the children to look at the front cover and predict what they think the story is about, what could happen in this story?

Thank you for taking the time to read with your child at home and sharing your thoughts with us in their reading diaries. Please could we ask that the children have their reading book and diary in their book bags daily.
