Adult directed activity -  UW  (Understanding of the World)

Planting seeds activity.

Talk about what happened to the grass in the story of ‘The Three Billy goats Gruff’ have a look at some grass outside, if possible dig a small piece up to look at/compare the roots. Ask the children how they think the grass got there. Discuss grass growing from grass seeds.  See Grass seeds PDF attached.

Look at the grass seeds and talk about what they will need to grow ie. Water, soil, light.

Discuss what they think might happen if the seeds don’t have these things?
Discuss that you are going to set up an experiment to see how seeds grow best. (Any fast growing seeds would do, such as cress seeds.) Don't worry if you don't  have seeds, you can always do this next part later in the week, or look at the planting we do in the classroom - we will post photos on Seesaw)
Plant in 4 small pots (disposable cups with holes in work well). Put two pots in the dark – water one, keep the other one dry (it would be helpful to label water & no water on each pot). Put two in the light, water one, keep the other one dry (it would be helpful to label water & no water on each pot).

Let the children keep a photo diary of what happens, taking a photo once a week to show and talk about any changes they see.
